It is getting colder here in Charlotte. The frigid temperatures are a constant reminder to stay warm both inside and outside the house. We know the challenge to find new and creative ways to stay warm but also saving money. Here are some tips and tricks that you can utilize to get the most out of your heating system.
Let’s start with the things that have no cost but big impact:
Lower thermostat – This one is basic and everyone knows it but we can’t leave it off the list. Adjust the system when you leave the house and when you go to bed. If you are like most people, that is at least 15 hours that the system isn’t working overtime and that is a lot of saved money. You can always bundle up at night with the system turned down and adjust it first thing in the morning, or even wait until you get home from work.

Fireplace – Close the flu when not in use.
Do a little cleaning. Make sure that all of the vents and fans are clear of dust and blockage. This can cause the heater to work harder and waste more money.
Free Solar
Take advantage of the sun. Open the blinds or curtains on the south side of the house during the day to absorb some free heat and close them back at night to make sure you keep the heat in.
If you want to take heating savings to another level then you can do some of the following:

  • Look for leaks and cover them fast.
  • Make sure all of the ducts are connected (check attics, basements or other places that could be loose)
  • Install a thermostat that can operate on a schedule so you can set it and forget it
  • Check insulation.
